It has a starting price around the £22,000 so we’re not talking about a bargain family runaround here – but it does have the Jeremy Clarkson seal of approval. Sorry. That may not be the best way to sell you the new Citroen DS5. I realise that Jeremy Clarkson isn’t exactly brilliant at capturing the women’s vote these days. Must be those jeans. Or the hair. Or the super-injunction.
But what I mean is that the DS5 won the Top Gear Family Car of the Year prize. It won the prize before it actually went on sale in the UK and it’s not as if Clarkson himself personally drove every single family car on the market. Can you really see him taking endless drives around the Top Gear track in an assortment of soccer taxis? Quite. Some people who are paid less but know far more about cars probably did the real work.
What’s intriguing is that it is doesn’t look very “family car”. There’s nothing chunky or dour about the design, it doesn’t scream:
“THIS IS A FUNCTIONAL CAR FOR MY SPROGS AND THEIR FRIENDS AND ASSORTED SPORTING EQUIPMENT AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND A DOG AND, GOOD GRIEF, I AM WEARING PINK TRACKSUIT BOTTOMS AND A PINK FLOYD T-SHIRT I SHOULD HAVE BURNT DECADES AGO AND I’M IN PUBLIC AND I DON’T CARE!”
Citroen claims this one has loads of cargo space as well as room for five people in comfort. So it’s probably well worth taking for a test drive if you want something for the school run. As a bonus (or not, depending on your attitude to glamour), it may force you to be one of the better dressed mums in the 3pm rush hour…
